Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. is able to function purely thanks to our dedicated foster care network. These wonderful people donate their time and care, opening their homes to animals who would otherwise be put to sleep, providing them with a temporary, safe stop over on their way to their new forever homes.
The more foster carers we have, the more animals we are able to rescue from pounds!
Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. prefers foster care to housing rescued animals in a penned shelter environment as it allows them greater interaction with people and can encourage healthy socialization with other domestic pets. As well, it give us the chance to learn about each animal’s personality.
While there can be the occasional heartbreak along the way, foster caring is, in general an incredibly rewarding experience.
Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. cover all veterinary expenses including worming and flea treatments, so it's a great way to share the benefits of caring for a rescued animal, particularly if you are unable to commit to the lifelong responsibility of pet ownership just now.
The first step is to fill in and return the Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc Foster Care Application Form. This tells us a little about you, your lifestyle and what type of animal would suit you best; Dogs, Puppies, Adult Cats, Pregnant Pets, Female Cats with a Litter, or Kittens. It's also important that you let us know how many animals we can place in your care.
Our Foster Care Co-Ordinators will then go through this form and assess your suitability. They will then be in touch with you to arrange a house inspection to ensure any animals placed in your care, along with any other pets and/or children you may have will all be safe.
Things we look for are secure fences and enough space for dogs to play, can cats be contained indoors, and will they receive enough attention and exercise.
Once your application has been approved, your details will be kept on file. Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. will contact you when we rescue an animal whose needs match with the home you can offer.
It is important to understand that this may not happen immediately. Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. will not place an animal in your care if we feel that an animal is not suited to your situation or that there is an unreasonable level of risk to anyone’s safety. It may take time but please be patient; we have not overlooked your offer.
Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. will contact you when we find an animal who matches you, before we can commit to its rescue. We will pass on all the information we have in regards to the animal, eg; breed, size, sex, age and temperament, and ask if you're able to help at that time
Transport/collection or drop off will then be arranged and the animal will ideally remain in your care until it is adopted.
You are expected to cover the expense of food and kitty litter if needed. However Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. does from time to time receive donations of pet food which is then distributed among foster carers.
Melbourne Animal Rescue Inc. will cover the expense of any and all vet work required including routine procedures such as de-sexing, vaccinations, worming and flea treatments and micro-chipping.
Note: ALL potential owners are screened and interviewed by Melbourne Animal Rescue prior to meeting any foster animals.
We also have a private group on Facebook you will be added to so you can communicate with other foster carers for Melbourne Animal Rescue. This is a wonderful tool, where you will find a generous amount of support, documentation to aid you during your time as a foster carer for Melbourne Animal Rescue and of course, plenty of photos of our fosters!
